Life After Rooney: A Look at Who Can Captain Manchester United Next

For most Manchester United supporters, it’s felt like a lifetime since their last conquest of the English Premier League in 2013.  The days of “Fergie Time” and silverware galore are now very much in the past, and it seems that the days of the few club legends left over from SAF’s reign are now numbered.  The two main faces remaining are current captain & vice-captain, Wayne Rooney & Michael Carrick. Carrick recently pledged his services for one more season, but it’s hard to see him in the team past that, and could struggle to start for the first team. Meanwhile, Rooney has been the subject of countless transfer rumors for a long time now, and he seems like a shadow of the player who established himself as the most prolific goal scorer in United’s history. For me, Wayne Rooney and Manchester United are synonymous, as is the case for most Red Devils fans in my generation.  It’s bittersweet to witness him seemingly at the end of his road at Old Trafford as it signals a new era for the club, especially with Jose Mourinho looking to make his presence known with the squad.

As Mourinho begins to reshape the squad with sights set on bringing United back to the summit of world football, Rooney & Carrick’s roles are likely to diminish with (hopefully) a busy transfer window and with the bright young talents coming up through the ranks. With that bears the burning question: who will serve as the next captain of Manchester United Football Club?

There are a few options within the current squad who could take on the armband, but the immense pressure and responsibility that comes with a captaincy at Manchester United must be taken into consideration.  Much like the coveted No. 7 shirt, some players haven’t performed to the level expected as club captain, and to the level required to keep that designation (looking at you, Chris Smalling). The next skipper will need to be able to handle the pressure of life at United, and have the characteristics of a natural born leader, on and off the pitch.  Here are my thoughts:

Paul Pogba: An obvious consideration, given his immense transfer fee to return to Old Trafford last summer and persona.  He started off slowly, but became a stalwart in the midfield and showed he’s fit for the task with his showings in Europa League play.  Much like fellow Frenchman Eric Cantona, he fits the mold to become a leader at United.  His marketability and status as a face of club sponsor adidas doesn’t hurt his cause either.

Ander Herrera:  An absolute fan-favorite at United, Herrera fits the mold of what the club currently needs in a captain.  He’s shown leadership on the field, he is never afraid to put his body in jeopardy and he scores vital goals every now and then. Herrera has proven to be a consistent starter who puts in a shift day in and day out and is very rarely seen in the tabloids. He should be the heir-apparent if Rooney were to leave United this summer.

David DeGea: David DeGea should be recognized as the best goalkeeper in the world right now; many experts have him in their top three, but how he’s not considered head and shoulders above the rest is absolutely beyond me. Without him, United would be nowhere near the top of the EPL, bailing out the underachieving revolving back four in front of him countless times over the past few seasons. His multiple transfer sagas could hurt his cause for the armband, but he’s done more than enough to prove his worth between the sticks.

Antonio Valencia: Valencia earned his first honor of captain this past season, in the Europa League Final no less.  A converted defender, Tony was arguably the player of the year for United, and has been a fixture and fan favorite for quite some time.  Valencia was one of the most consistent wing-backs in the world last season, but as Mourinho re-shapes the squad, his spot on the field and in the talks for captaincy are likely in jeopardy.

Eric Bailly:  Some may see this as a surprise inclusion, but Bailly quickly became a fan-favorite at United in his first season with the club and served as a rock in the ever-fluent back four.  Like Herrera, he’s not afraid to get stuck in, absolutely flying into tackles on a regular basis, and seemingly getting red cards at a similar pace. Think Rio Ferdinand with the physicality and mentality of Diego Costa. He’s got the necessary passion and spirit, but somewhat consistent injuries and card suspensions could hurt his cause with the boss.

PERSONAL PREDICTION:

Captain: Paul Pogba

Vice-Captain: Ander Herrera

Alternates: Bailly, DeGea, Valencia

The return of Champions League Football gives patrons of the Theatre of Dreams the ability to do just that once again.  Manchester United has seemed to get some of its swagger back with Mourinho at the helm, and world class players continue to be beckoned by the unparalleled history of the club along with the lure of UCL and the fight to be kings of England once again.  Exciting times are definitely ahead for the Red Devils; who will be leading them on the field to glory? We’ll have to wait and see.

Boxing is Making a Comeback in 2017

Boxing’s modern history goes back a century. Legendary fighters stepped into the ring to show their prowess and won the hearts of millions of people.

There was a time when boxers were regarded as titans among athletes and their popularity had no comparison. One need only looks at the picture of press coverage of Muhammad Ali to see how enamored people were with boxers.

But that golden era has long gone and in the past decade or so boxing has declined in popularity, thanks mainly to MMA (mixed martial arts). It has come to the point that fans of the sport want to see a boxer fight an MMA fighter.

Boxing

The Rise of MMA

Bandwagon fans of boxing find such matchups intriguing because sadly boxing has had some rough few years. There haven’t been fights that have excited fans like in the olden days, with a few exceptions. The popularity of MMA has had an effect on boxing ratings among fans.

In 2015, primetime boxing fights drew 2.88 million viewers, while MMA prime time fights attracted 3.09 million viewers.

The numbers speak for themselves, and just a couple of years ago it seemed that boxing was breathing its last. But the news of its demise was greatly exaggerated because a few captivating matchups have breathed new life into the sport and it is making a strong comeback in 2017.

New Life

Boxing was never really down and out as some people believed, there were fights that showed that spark and finally in the past year or so boxing has come back with a bang.

Pacquiao vs. Mayweather

New life was breathed into boxing in 2015 with the biggest fight in decades; Pacquiao – Mayweather drew in crowds from everywhere. Celebrities and boxing enthusiasts descended on Las Vegas and 4.4 million people tuned in to watch the two best fighters of the age battle for greatness.

The fight had the hype that is worthy of a PPV boxing fight.

The fight itself was less competitive than people predicted and but it had everything that a basketball fan should appreciate.

Joshua vs. Klitschko

The biggest attraction for boxing fans in 2017 was Joshua – Klitschko fight. The heavyweight championship fight for the ages featured an aging Wladimir Klitschko and the young and energetic Anthony Joshua.

True fans of the sport could see the turning of the tide when April 29 drew closer. There was excitement about boxing once again and the bout did not disappoint at all.

Both fighters gave a valiant effort until Round 11 when Joshua came out with newfound aggression and referee stopped the fight to crown him the WBA, IBO and IBF heavyweight champion of the world. An instant classic.

Jacobs vs. Golovkin

Gennady Golovkin is perhaps one of the most popular boxers in the world right now and he was challenged by Danny Jacobs. What made the match exciting was the fact that everyone believed that ‘GGG’ will wipe the floor with Jacobs. But the fight was very competitive and lasted the whole 12 rounds. No fighter could be ruled out until the end of the fight when judges called the bout in favor of Golovkin.

This edge of the seat thriller was exactly what the sport of boxing needed in 2017.

More Exciting Things to Come

2017 in only just half way done and it has plenty more to offer in terms of boxing duels.

Berchelt vs. Miura

The super popular featherweight division has an upcoming fight that is highly anticipated in boxing circles. The WBC world super featherweight champion Miguel Berchelt will take on the former champion Takashi Miura.

A fight that many are referring to as a strong contender for the ‘Fight of the Year.

Crawford vs. Indongo

When two unbeaten fighters step into the ring it always makes for an intriguing fight. WBA, WBC and WBO light welterweight champion Terence Crawford (31-0) will face Julius Indongo (22-0) in August.

Mayweather vs. McGregor

There is a lot of hype surrounding this fight. Many hardcore boxing fans find the fight to be an entertainment ploy and nothing else. No matter the intentions of the promoters, Floyd Mayweather and Connor McGregor will give fans a good show. And when Mayweather knocks out McGregor, everyone will know why boxing is the superior sport.

Golovkin vs. Alvarez

Golovkin will step into the ring one more time this year to defend his title against one of the best boxers in Mexico, Alvarez. Golovkin is still undefeated, while Alvarez has only been beaten by Mayweather. The fight will be the biggest PPV fight since Mayweather – Pacquiao in 2015.

These are just the primetime fights, there are many more exciting matchups and bouts that show that boxing has made a huge comeback in 2017.

Boxing has recaptured the prestige it once held. It will continue to mesmerize fans with breathtaking bouts and battles of titans of the ring!
